Abstract

In this article, Susanne Margrethe Jakobsen Ilskov and Anne-Marie Søndergaard Christensen look closer at transgender people’s experience with the healthcare system. To capture their specific challenges and needs, two existential analyses of transgender self-understanding are introduced. The investigation is complemented by a similar analysis of the healthcare system’s response to and understanding of the situation of transgender people, more specifically the role of the healthcare professional and the special ethical considerations that arise from this meeting. Finally, a proposal for how the (listening and self-aware) healthcare professional might best meet transgender patients by allowing room for their particular stories and lived experiences is presented.
