Abstract
In recent years industrial companies have entered a new era of global distributed production through outsourcing and offshoring. A key issue is knowledge sharing and knowledge development in and between production units geographically spread around the world. Based on three case studies in two industrial companies with plans to transfer production units to another location, this paper addresses the initial steps of pursuing this issue by presenting and testing a model for identification of the activities, task and knowledge on the shop floor jobs. This has provided a broader understanding of the jobs to be transferred and has led to a changed focus for training new workers. Secondly, the paper will address how to capture the knowledge associated with carrying out these jobs. And third, planning the transfer process will be discussed to form a basis for future continuous improvements and innovations.
