This paper investigates the role of standardization for innovation among selected actors in the electric car industry. The case indicates that both formal standards and radical innovations have been developed, and that standards in themself do not exclude the existence or development of innovations; in fact standards may contribute positively to innovation. The essential standards developed so far have mainly brought compatibility among components and innovations in the industry, which made it possible to electrical car manufacturers to align innovation activities and adapt new technology effectively. However, standardization takes time and may complicate innovation in those areas in which the standards are directly concerned, but there are still many innovation opportunities open, which success dependent on technological compatibility achieved through standardization.
