Abstract
a speculative contribution on the early history of the sword dance custom in England (winter-season money-gathering perambulations) prompted by two isolated sixteenth-century references; it suggests a significant link with the analogous plough-trailing custom, and invokes the later tradition at Goathland, Yorkshire, where the two forms are combined.
