Abstract

This chapter asks whether sanctions regimes that are adopted in WTW legislation in (European) welfare states comply with the fundamental right to social assistance. It pays particular attention to the role of mitigation mechanism by comparing the sanction regimes in the Netherlands and the UK. In addition, this chapter reveals how policy actors deliberately circumvent the harsh sanction regime recently adopted in the Netherlands.’
