Abstract

This paper mainly aims to explore how SMEs internationalise their production. Directed by this objective, a
new practice adopted by five Danish SMEs to internationalise their production to China is identified, which to
our knowledge has never been reported by any of the existing literature. The new practice is further
analysed in terms of (1) general information of each case company; (2) motivation of production
internationalisation of each case company; (3) limitations as SMEs to internationalise production; (4)
operational activities during the internationalization; (5) benefits of joint effort; and (6) challenges during the
internationalisation and in the future. By doing so, this paper contributes to complementing the existing
literature as well as providing mangers with the inspirations about when, why, and how to adopt the reported
practice.
