The catalogue is designed to list all accessible versions (in broadside and chapbook formats) of the over fifty known 'Murdered Sweetheart Ballads', together with the scholarship on them. It has a lengthy Introduction on the genre, its sub-forms, and its contexts, and there are substantial headnotes discussing individual ballads, or groups (ballads on the same murder case) or clusters (the same ballad adapted to recount different cases).
