Abstract

We present a strategical approach for research libraries based on the experience accumulated through the strategical process (2013), organizational change process (2014-2015) and evaluation (2015-2016) at The University Library of Southern Denmark leading to the library’s current 2020 strategy. The approach in question utilizes a concept of balanced scales and assumes that research libraries emerge “naturally” from academia’s need to handle fundamental practicalities related to carry out efficient scholarly communication and teaching. We argue that framing libraries’ strategies as research-based supports research libraries’ mission in bridging academia (higher education and R&D) on the one hand, and efficient ressource administration, high level service and supporting infrastructure on the other hand. In order to co-evolve this bridge while maintaing fitness of purpose, libraries have to manage a delicate balance, in our view best achieved by research-based service development.
