Abstract

This chapter has three authors. The first Part A is written by Thomas Markussen from University of Southern Denmark to provide an overview of how the notion of ‘social change’ can be conceptualised using extant research literature. In the second Part B, the reader will find a round table conversation, in which Thomas Markussen invites Daniela Selloni from Politecnico di Milano and Joyce Yee from Northumbria University to discuss their critical views on social change in service design.

With the growing popularity of Service Design, this handbook revisits the disciplinary premises to develop our understanding of the context, role and impact of this practice. While global debates are pointing towards transversal issues such as climate, racial and social justice, the editors have been drawing together multiple voices to share experiences and perspectives on how Service Design crosses over into many of these contested spaces. As a way to point the discipline into a more sustainable direction, the handbook offers different theoretical frames and critical agendas to inform practical approaches and future perspectives.
