Abstract

The reflection electron energy-loss spectra of low-index surfaces of Sc, Y and Lu single crystals have been studied using primary electrons in the energy range 25-2000 eV. Major similarities have been found between the loss spectra of the three elements concerning both the collective excitations as well as the band transitions. The characteristic energy losses observed in Sc and Y match those of the other elements at the lower and f the first and second group of transition metals. The LMM and MNN Auger spectra of Sc and Y are discussed in relation to the quasiatomic vs band characteristics of Auger electrons.
