Probing the electrolyte/electrode interface of half-cells using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy

Abstract

Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) as energy conversion systems is a green alternative due to its zero emission and high efficiency. However, a major challenge in its commercialization is their high cost and lower durability. It has been well established that the issue of durability is fundamentally due to degradation of the electrode catalyst as well as electrolyte/electrode interface.
In this paper,we investigate the interface of electrolyte/electrode by using a half-cell technique.The schematic of half-cell used for testing is shown in figure 1. Two types of half-cell will be tested and are made of (i) catalyst coated membrane (CCM) with a carbon electrode and (ii) catalyst coated gas-diffusion-electrode (CCG) laminated with the membrane. These half-cells will be investigated using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) for evaluation of their performance and interface-quality, respectively.Additionally, the half-cell will be tested for degradation using a standardized degradation protocol and during the degradation test,the performance and interface-quality of the half-cell will be estimated using CV and EIS. Detailed results and discussion will be presented at the conference.
