Empirical studies in three industrial firms have revealed that firms holding many years of experience of transferring manufacturing facilities to other countries seem mainly to focus on planning the physical transfer of manufacturing equipment and to focus on the explicit knowledge related to the manufacturing facilities. The firms appear to be uncertain of how to identify, transfer and develop tacit knowledge. Literature studies support a need for more systematic methods to transfer and develop knowledge to be able to accelerate the ramp-up of production after the transfer of manufacturing facilities. A model holding generic phases throughout the whole transfer process is introduced. It introduces a division between the dispatching and the receiving organization. A model for identification of tacit knowledge in the dispatching context has been developed and tested.
