Abstract
Applied work with several top-level professional clubs in England suggests that many youth players do not progress on to professional levels because of psychological challenges that impact negatively on their well-being, mental health, and performance (Nesti 2010). In recent research, Jensen et al. 2018 also revealed a higher prevalence of depression for young talented footballers compared to professional footballers. Current views on mental health and well-being have shifted the focus from a negative conceptualization of mental health as the absence of mental illness to definitions that encompass positive aspects and include the level of functioning of individuals. The purpose of this symposium is to provide researchers and sport psychology practitioners, with knowledge about mental health and practical guidance for working with mental health issues with young footballers.
In the first contribution from Holland there will be a closer look on development of psychological assets, such as the ability to set goals, prepare for important events, coping with adversity, manage stress in school and football.
The second contribution from Denmark will illustrate which factors that respectively correlates with mental disorders and which factors that supports well-being and mental health among sixty-eight Danish youth footballers. Amongst other, social support from the sport environment was positively correlated with well-being and negatively with depression.
The final and third contribution from England will describe how experienced sport psychology consultants focuses on new approaches to identity (e.g., existential and Jungian) from an holistic perspective, and stress the importance of meaning, psychological equilibrium and authenticity for sound mental health for young footballers.
