Abstract

The Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel, founded in 1665, is a state university in Schleswig-Holstein located about 100 km south of the border to Denmark. A modern university, the Christian-Albrechts-Universität has strong contacts to other universities and is part of regional and international networks. There is no region that is as present in the university’s recent history as Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea region.
Like a self-fulfilling prophecy, concrete scientific emphases combine with references to a special historical tradition or duty that is justified by the geographical location near the Danish-German border and the Baltic Sea.
By repeating relatively similar argumentation patterns, an image
of the university was projected to the public ›naturally‹ cultivating strong connections to the North. In this brief project outline, accompanied by two case studies, the emergence of a regional focus within the international contacts of a West German university after World War II is depicted, using the example of the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel. Against the background of the creation, strengthening and institutionalization of this regional focus at different university levels, the focus is also on making the resulting profile
visible to the public, which went hand in hand with conflict if other actors outside the university, such as the media or political institutions, were involved.
