Abstract

New empirical studies have shown an almost overall positive relation between religious faith and physical and psychological health, but they have also shown that this positive relation is determent by the way a person believes. Based on this empirical evidence the hypothesis of this master thesis concerns: In
a psychological perspective there are ways of being religious which is better than others and it is possible to develop a persons ways of being religious from something not or less beneficial to something beneficial.

In this masters thesis I explore how a therapist as a part of the psychological intervention can assist a religious client who is in a existential crisis through a process of religious development from a way of believing which is not beneficial for the client to a better level of religious faith where the client will be able to benefit from his or her religiousness. To do that a standard for the direction of the good religious development must be examined and determined to make sure the intervention towards the good religious development is founded in psychological and empirical theory. Based on such a standard some tentative
directions for a method of psychological intervention towards the good religious development is suggested.
