Abstract

Background: There are approximately 4000 new cases of lung cancer per year in DK. Former studies shows that patients experience the pathway of lung cancer diagnosis as very challenging. An application (app) was developed containing patient information’s and video about examinations performed during the fast-track program, to improve patient self-management.Aim and objectives: We wanted to examine if the application was used by the patients, how it was used and whether it was considered as an appropriate tool for providing information.Method: A qualitative approach was chosen comprising semi-structured interviews by phone within a month after receiving the app at the initializing meeting in the diagnostic pathway. They were asked if they used the app and found the content useful. The interviews were analyzed looking for meaningful units in and across the interviews. Results: Within two weeks 74 patients were referred, 33 patients were excluded due to language problems, emotional stress, or lack of time. Twenty-one patients did not want the app and therefore could not participate (27%). Twenty patients (27%) agreed to participate in the study (11 men/9 women); mean age men 54 years [range 31-72]; mean range women 72 years [range 61-77]. None of them used the app due to low eHealth literacy, emotional stress and owing to all the examinations, there were plenty of room to ask a health professional in person, which they preferred. Conclusion: Patients did not use an app about their lung cancer examination program. Patients perspectives revealed that innovation in health care should be preceded by pilot studies in the recipient group to assure best value for money spend.FootnotesCite this article as: European Respiratory Journal 2021; 58: Suppl. 65, PA1800.This abstract was presented at the 2021 ERS International Congress, in session “Prediction of exacerbations in patients with COPD”.This is an ERS International Congress abstract.
