    Abstract

Research on children with SSD mainly indicates a delayed rather than different development of clusters (CC). Since CC investigations, however, usually focus on CCs independent of the context of the child’s speech, it will to be questioned to which extend a claim for a delayed CC development can be made, since it might be possible that not all CC mismatches are a problem of the CC structure itself, but rather a secondary result of further occurring pattern. Therefore, the aim of the study was to investigate CC-realisations as CC structures and in context of children’s speech in Danish-speaking children with SSD.

Picture naming test data of 110 monolingual Danish-speaking children aged 3;02-6;07 with SSD were investigated. They were analysed per child for Percentage CC correct (PCCC), CC-realization pattern and further phonological pattern. Data were then compared to results found in typically developing (TD) children concerning PCCC and realisation pattern. Additionally, it was investigated to which extend phonological pattern found in an individual child influenced CC-production in the same child.

Results indicated that children with SSD were delayed in their correctness of cluster production, with PCCCs significantly lower than those found in TD children. However, the realization pattern found were identical in both groups. The analysis of phonological pattern next to CC- simplifications indicated that in many children CC-simplifications were not necessarily a problem of the CC-structure itself but secondary mismatches due to other patterns. It will be argued that the labels “cluster reduction” or “cluster simplification” without the context of the child’s further error patterns might not sufficiently describe a child’s speech problem.
