Abstract

The chapter is a theoretical contribution to the discussion on visual meaning production in design. In the argument of the article, the ability of the visual to construct meaning can productively be questioned in its ontological foundation at the intersection of negativity and presence. The effect is transvisual as it relates to the overall construction of meaning in design. By employing the phenomenological concept of the imaginary as an entry point for analyzing the ontological status and mode of operation of the visual in design, the article investigates the visual in design with regard to its ability to evocate presence, operate as representation and enable possibilities. In line with the theoretical discussion, three aspects of visual communication in design are examined: The visually communicating surface of design objects as a strategy of evoking visual presence, graphic design as simulated representation, and the interface design of digital design artifacts as the stimulation of possibility.
