Abstract
In this paper, I propose clandestine openness to address an empirically observed paradox: While police officials’ use open-source intelligence (OSINT) is grounded in principles of ‘openness’, the obscuration of openly available information in the digital era, in combination with secretive means of accessing, sharing and utilising the information, give rise to clandestine practices. The study contributes to discussions about the dyadic and paradoxical relationship between transparency and secrecy in organisation studies by surfacing factors that generate ‘clandestine openness’.
