Abstract

This study compares the vocal performance/presentation characteristics of U.S.-American CEOs and coaches for guided meditation, focusing on pitch, voice quality, and pausing. Speech samples from twelve speakers were analyzed acoustically: six popular coaches (3 m/f) and six successful corporate leaders (3 m/f). Results show that male meditation coaches typically use low-pitched, tense-to-modal voices with limited pitch variation, little declination across phrases, and extended pauses, whereas male CEOs display higher and more variable pitch contours, distinct final falls, and brighter and louder voices. Female meditation coaches employ breathy, high-pitched, spectrally soft voices with narrow pitch ranges, prolonged pauses, and slower speaking rates, while female CEOs produce lower, brighter, and more modulated voices. Charismatic leadership speech and popular guided meditation thus reflect diametrically opposed patterns – the former marked by vocal dynamism and assertiveness, the latter by stability and prolonged silence. Yet, the results also challenge the stereotype of a soft, effortless meditative voice, suggesting instead that vocal effort and controlled tension play a crucial role in achieving a calming auditory effect – paradoxically requiring the speaker’s exertion to elicit the listener’s relaxation.
