Friedhöfe als Gedächtnislandschaften der Regionalgeschichte: Die Traditionsstätte St. Jürgen auf dem Kieler Parkfriedhof Eichhof

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingBook chapterResearchpeer-review

This essay shows the variety of methods and the potential for teaching modern regional history based on a student project. The starting point is the traditional site of St. Jürgen at the Eichhof in Kiel about which information boards were designed by students on-site to draw attention to the importance of the visibly older gravestones. Preserved gravestones from the old Kiel cemetery St. Jürgen (1793‒1900) were transferred to the Eichhof after World War II, after the total destruction of the cemetery, which had been unused since 1901, during the bombing war, and are now listed as historical monuments. From today’s point of view, different epochs of Kiel’s city history – but also in the past of Schleswig-Holstein, Denmark and Prussia – overlapped in the stones and in both cemeteries which thus became palimpsests.
The grave of the physician Christian Johann Berger, the double grave Baggesen/Reinhold, and the family grave Hegewisch are used to illustrate perspectives on personal and university history as well as social, political, and gender history. In addition, the two cemeteries exemplify perspectives on questions of the history of ideas or urban geographies, such as the Enlightenment or car-friendly urban planning after 1945. The cemeteries and the individual gravestones thus function in different contexts as landscapes of memory for regional history. The essay pleads for interdisciplinary research beyond one-sided national narratives and shows how knowledge transfer
between university and society can succeed even on a supposed niche topic.
