Abstract

This article focuses on readers’ use of literature; in particular how readers and authors in literature use literature to understand and construct identity. In line with not least work by Rita Felski, I take my point of departure in readings of four well known scandinavian male authors; Karl Ove Knausgård, Tomas Espedal, Knud Romer and Pablo Llambias. The reading sets off from the notion that the use of literature in these oeuvres relate to a particular idea of masculine identity building, and the article focuses on how the protagonists through their literary capital and reading habits try to not only adjust but also at the same time escape these conceptions of ideal masculinity.
