Finger joint detection vision algorithm for autonomous rheumatoid ultrasound scan

Abstract

The use of ultrasound scanning in rheumatology has been shown to be a sensitive and specific modality for assessing joint disease. It is used for both detection of early signs of disease and determination of arthritis activity in established disease. In order to improve the monitoring and treatment of arthritis patients, an automated system to scan the joints of the wrist and hand is developed. In this paper, a vision algorithm used to locate the joints from a camera is proposed. The joints are found by using a global approach combined with a geometric analysis of the image. The algorithm is used on a platform where a robot arm can move an ultrasound probe to the joints. The overall detection rate is 92% with the majority of variance found along the finger.
