Feasibility, Acceptability, and Preliminary Effectiveness of a Group-based Psychoeducational Intervention for Relatives to Individuals with Mental Illness: A Pilot Study

Research output: Contribution to conference without publisher/journalConference abstract for conferenceResearchpeer-review

Background: The impact of mental illness extends beyond the affected individual and can have a significant impact on relatives, who often act as primary caregivers. In this study, we evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness of a group-based psychoeducational intervention delivered in a civil society context. The manual for the intervention was developed in a partnership between a civil society organization and the regional psychiatry.
Methods: Participants are recruited through convenience sampling from caregivers, who participate in the psychoeducational intervention. The intervention is open to all family, friends, and significant others, who self-identify as caregivers or relatives of individuals with mental illness. Inclusion criteria limit participation to caregivers who are 18 years of age or older and who reads and speaks Danish. The pilot feasibility study employs a pretest-posttest design. Caregiver well-being, burnout, and coping will be evaluated along with demographic characteristics of participants and their overall satisfaction with the intervention. A number of participants will also be invited for an in-depth interview after the intervention.
Results: We present preliminary findings regarding the quantitative measures of feasibility (e.g., participation numbers), acceptability (satisfaction) and effectiveness (well-being, burnout, and coping) of the intervention. Data collection for the pilot feasibility study will be completed in January, 2024. The findings will inform intervention refinement and evaluation methods. The study received funding from Sundhedsdonationer.
