Exploring Smart Factory for New Product Development

Abstract

This paper explores the use of smart learning-factory platforms for the new product development process. The research is aimed to develop a new product development (NPD) framework that integrates industry 4.0 technological enablers in the form of a production platform for prototypes development usable for product development phase up to commercialization with the objective of reduction in NPD lead-time. Physical prototypes are often required for test and validation of complex mechatronic products during the development phase. The flexibility in the proposed manufacturing system is enabled by modularization, reconfigurability, and human-centered automation thus offering high-mix low-volume production (HMLV) of physical functional prototypes.
