Abstract

The literature shows contradictory results on the effect of small amounts of shear reinforcement on the shear capacity of reinforced concrete beams. In some cases, small amounts of shear reinforcement are shown to increase the shear capacity, while in others the shear capacity is not affected when compared to similar beams without shear reinforcement. Indicating that other important design parameters need to be investigated. This paper presents the experimental results of 14 shear tests designed to investigate the influence of the stirrup spacing on the shear capacity of RC beams. In these tests, the stirrup spacing is varied while the shear reinforcement ratio is constant, obtained by varying the width of the beam and the diameter of the stirrups. The investigation shows that a smaller spacing and diameter of the stirrups increase the shear capacity.
