Abstract

Mathematics plays a vital role in enabling citizens to understand, analyse, and determine solutions to real-world problems. The research presented in this chapter explores the roles of mathematics in 26 STEM activities that were developed and implemented by teachers as part of the LabSTEM research and development project conducted in primary and lower secondary schools in Denmark. The findings reveal the teachers succeeded in developing activities that centred on mathematics and also, to some extent, addressed crucial societal issues. The analyses expose the challenges of developing activities which established a genuine connection between mathematical tasks and understanding the role of mathematics in society. This balance is difficult for teachers to achieve, without support, time, professional development, and guidance from school leaders.
