Abstract

Background: The relevance of ethnicity as a perspective in research has been a subject of discussion. In forensic mental health, evidence suggests that there is discrimination in nursing care and treatment.

Aim: To discuss and present perspectives on the importance of ethnicity in forensic mental health research.

Method: Essay.

Results: Ethnic disparities are shown within different areas of forensic mental health. These appear both in relation to civil law matters and in the traditional criminal mental health law sense. Forensic mental health focusing on evidence-based practice and cultural safety may be needed to secure the best nursing care and treatment, as well as safety for all.

Conclusion: This essay illustrates that ethnicity may be a relevant and important perspective within forensic mental health research. Increased focus on this issue may improve the mental health of forensic ethnic minority patients.
