Designing and Evaluating Interoperable Industry 4.0 Middleware Software Architecture: Reconfiguration of Robotic System

Abstract

Interoperable middleware is a step towards fulfilling the Industry 4.0 (I4.0) vision to support the reconfiguration of production systems. Therefore examining interoperable middleware software architectures supports the development of flexible I4.0 production systems. This paper aims to design and evaluate an I4.0 middleware software architecture based on a developed interoperability quality attribute scenario (QAS). An industry use case for production reconfiguration is described and used as input to develop a quantifiable interoperability QAS. Production concepts are clarified as background to specify an interoperability QAS. An interoperable middleware software architecture is designed using architectural tactics to meet the QAS. An experiment evaluates the proposed middleware software architecture on actual production equipment. The results show a promising middleware software architecture design that fulfills the specified interoperability QAS.
