Abstract

Design is often seen as rooted in the cultural heritage of the designing enterprise and thus in the sphere of the culture dominating a specific area. We easily talk of Scandinavian design; Japanese design or Italian design, just to mention a few. On the other hand, it is also an intrinsic foundation of design that it aims to change established meanings constituting the very cultural sphere in which it is prevailing. Designing, as an activity, is thus squeezed in a paradoxical agency between reproduction and innovation of meanings in society as well as in the organization.
In this conceptual paper we address the apparent paradox in perspective of the organizational culture theory and examine the role of design in reproducing
and innovating dominant organizational cultures.
