Abstract

Within the last decade, the use of new technologies and digital media has increased in outdoor cultures in different ways. The development, often referred to as a ‘double-edged sword’, causes some concern and may represent both challenges and new possibilities to people’s outdoor practices. Social media are increasingly being used as part of informal non-profit virtual networks with a focus on nature experiences. This chapter presents findings from a study aiming to explore how Danish outdoor Facebook groups can be understood as a cultural phenomenon by gaining insights into how networks serve as platforms for engagement and participation in active outdoor life.
