Chinese Culture meets Danish Culture: cross-cultural dialogue and cultural framing in a Multinational Corporation

China has over the past several decades become a host country for many multinational corporations. As people of the host and home/other countries and cultures work side by side of each other, cross-cultural dialogue becomes the key for smooth communication, healthy organization and business success.
Generic cross-cultural literature often portrays Chinese culture as the opposite of the Western culture and hence difficult for foreigners to master. Also, culture and cultural differences are treated as ‘a barrier to interaction and an all-pervading source of confusion’ (Sødeberg and Holden 2002:105). What attributing to this pathological way of thinking culture and cultural difference is the static view of culture as a box and cultural meet as collision between boxes.
This paper takes a ‘social constructive’ approach to culture. It looks at culture not as a ‘thing’ but rather as an ongoing ‘sense-making’ process where people of different cultural backgrounds constantly mark and negotiate their cultural identity and working relations to each other. Based on a recent fieldwork research of a Danish company (Danfoss) in China which gave 66 semi-structured interviews, this paper examines how ‘culture’ comes to expression in the employees’ narratives about their organization and how different opinions about the company’s market strategy, communication flow and human resource management are articulated through ‘culture framing’.
