Abstract
Caroline Levine’s The Activist Humanist urges the humanities to shift from critical analysis to practical action in addressing the climate crisis. Emphasizing the role of “forms”, Levine argues for their potential to sustain collective life and foster incremental political change. Through examples like infrastructure, public murals, protests, and literary texts, she demonstrates how even restrictive forms can be repurposed for resilience and cooperation. While raising vital questions about the humanities’ role in the present, the book’s universalist claims and limited engagement with non-human perspectives prompt further debate.
