Abstract

Due to its significant contribution to global energy consumption and the associated share of carbon emissions, the construction sector is a crucial part of energy efficiency and environmental plans and efforts. These objectives, as well as the development towards the digitalization of the building portfolio, have prompted the need for more intelligent, adaptable, and proactive buildings. In light of this, a building automation and control system (BACS) which is well-designed, built, and run properly is essential for attaining environmental and energy efficiency goals, as well as for delivering high levels of comfort and providing the building's occupants with the needed valuable information. In this study, the design functions and services offered by the automation and control system are assessed using an innovative platform called IBACSA for BACS assessment and building smartness evaluation. The platform evaluates eight different technical building domains that span 60 major building services, reports the rating and performance of each domain, and considers various impact criteria into account. Three Danish buildings of various types, sizes, and uses are considered as a case study to implement IBACSA. In each instance, the BACS design and functions are assessed and graded, and recommendations for improvement are highlighted.
