Abstract
The BEST EN Think Tank VIII acknowledges that tourism is a well-known tool to facilitate
regeneration and economic development and enhance the quality of life of visitors and host
communities. The theme reflects the fact that finding the right balance between the welfare of
tourists, host communities and the environment, reducing conflict, recognising mutual dependency,
and enhancing quality of life requires a sustainable approach to the development and management
of destinations, organisations and enterprises. The three day event included a variety of
approaches to explore the topic: keynote speeches, research paper presentations, an industry
open forum supporting the development of regionally-based case studies, and breakout sessions
dedicated to the development of a cutting edge research agenda.
The proceedings present work by academics and practitioners worldwide, who research various
aspects of sustainable tourism with an emphasis, particularly from its keynote speakers on the
conference theme.
