Project Details
Description
Background
Pain presents a common, complex and serious health issue. The co-existence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and pain can result in more severe symptoms and a poorer prognosis. The risk of developing pain and PTSD is especially high in the aftermath of sexual assault. Furthermore, there is a large symptom overlap between chronic pain and PTSD. Currently there is a lack of knowledge on the interplay between pain sensibilisation, post-traumatic reactions and sexual assault.
Purpose and focus
This project aims to investigate the development of pain following sexual assault, including the influence of prior traumatic exposure, pain sensibilisation and complex posttraumatic reactions. This knowledge can be used to improve screening and treatment for survivors of sexual assault and pain patients.
Methods
The current research project will primarily be based on questionnaires, diagnostic interviews, and experimental data.
