    Description

The Treatment of Mentally Disabled Citizens 1929-1980
In Denmark as elsewhere, mentally disabled citizens were institutionalized and separated from the rest of society. Motivated by eugenic, social concerns and political discussions from 1929 and onwards, a ‘special care’ sector was established in Denmark in 1933.
The purpose of this Ph.D.-thesis is to examine and discuss the political and administrative history of the Danish Special Care sector from 1929-80. The thesis will be a significant and original contribution to the History of the Danish Welfare System, which have never been subject to systematic research focusing on the archives from the central administration.
The intention is furthermore to identify how institutions are path dependent and slow on reacting to demands for change. The third part of the project is to examine the influence of narratives and international ideas on institutions and the actors inside them.
