Globe at Night

Are you a scout leader, an amateur astronomer, a schoolteacher, a night owl or a camper?
Or are you just interested in taking care of our night sky?
University Library of Southern Denmark invites you to support the Citizen Science project Globe at Night. The Globe at Night project is an international citizen-science campaign that seeks to raise public awareness of the night sky and the impact of light pollution by inviting citizens to measure and submit observations of the brightness of the night sky. Observations of the night sky from all over the world provide the possibility to carry out research about wildlife, health energy consumption and much more.

Everyone can participate:
If you do not have access to a computer or a newer smartphone you can participate by using the facilities at one of our libraries. You can also participate by borrowing one of the “Sky Quality Meters” – light measuring equipment that the University Library at Southern Denmark has bought. These can be used if you want to try to carry out professional light measurements in the night. We have also acquired astronomical telescopes if you want to improve your stargazing. Though these are not necessary to participate in the project.

The library has a Danish translation of the instruction manual suitable for a target group of 10 to 12-year old pupils available for download.

Background:
​At University Library of Southern Denmark we are highly engaged in Citizen Science. For us, Citizen Science is about establishing interaction and dialogue between citizens and scientists. We therefore want to help create awareness and be advocates for Citizen Science, for example this IAU - International Astronomical Unions - recognized project Globe at Night.

We believe, that if libraries can provide literature, information and culture, we can also manage to engage and involve the citizen in society and research!
