Key findings
In my book "Civil War Settlers: Scandinavians, Citizenship, and American Empire, 1848-1870," based on findings during the project period and beyond, I argue that Scandinavian immigrants, who equated citizenship with liberty and equality, proved to be ardent republicans, but not abolitionists and delve into the draft resistance prevalent in Wisconsin and elsewhere.
