Excess deaths and life-years lost due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Denmark

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

Almost all studies of the health impact of Covid-19 have focused on analyzing incomplete and often inaccurate data on reported infections, hospitalizations and deaths. We will estimate excess deaths by age and sex and over time. We will study excess deaths caused directly by Covid-19 or indirectly because of pressures on the health care system and effects of policy interventions. These excess deaths are a measure of the total impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. We will also estimate the life-years-lost because of the excess deaths. To gain a deeper understanding of the nature of the Covid-19 pandemic, we will analyze excess deaths by municipality, by living arrangements, and by SES. We will compare Denmark to Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Italy and Spain with regard to the impact on policy interventions on excess deaths and life-years lost.
