We are approaching the Carlsberg Foundation with a request for a quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) analyzer for our new molecular ecological labo‐ratory. In recent years, qPCR analysis has become a key technique in microbial ecology for linking biogeochemical process rate measurements to numbers of organisms performing specific processes, and to their specific activity. We explore biogeochemical processes in Danish freshwater, estuarine, and coastal ecosystems and recently also started to study the microbial community composition in these environments using molecular methods. The qPCR analyzer will be an essential piece of equipment for us to establish a quantitative link between biogeochemical function and microbial community composition in these systems.
