The project Carbon Dioxide Theater at Västmanland County Museum´s (VLM) overall aim is to take urgent action to combat climate change connecting directly to Sustainable Development Goal 13: Climate Action. With an educational and inclusivity purpose, this project engages young citizens in critically reflecting on social norms and practices around climate goals and CO2 emissions, through participatory theatre methods. In this way, the project activates the norm shaping and negotiation around climate goals with participatory methods to socially explore current research on 1) required limitations to our carbon emissions (Rockström et al. 2009) and 2) experiencing individual carbon footprints (Wessman & Reitsma 2018). VLM is moving from a work method of collaboration to participatory co-creation in order to adhere to one of their priorities: to be an arena for democratic dialogue. The project is an attempt to create such an arena on a local level. The museum’s existing collections are central in facilitating reflection on the temporality of social norms in the project. The participatory processes and explorations of existing objects in the collection will shape the foundation for a PopUp exhibition, that will be co-created with the young citizens. In this way, we foresee that the project can add to the discourse of how climate research can be communicated in ways that can attract a wider public.
