The Border Regions in Transition (BRIT) Conference is one of the two leading academic international conferences on borders and borderlands. Since 1994, meetings have been jointly
held in two cities situated in different countries, including San Diego-Tijuana (1999), Jerusalem-
Palestine (2005), and Fukuoka-Busan (2012). The objective of the 15th BRIT Conference organized by the University of Southern Denmark, the University of Hamburg and the HafenCity University Hamburg on May 17-20 2016 between Hamburg and Sønderborg is to rethink the complicated relationships that bind cities and state borders.
