Research areas

Xanthi Tsoukli is a PhD candidate in Economics at the Department of Business and Economics, where she works closely with HEDG – the Historical Economics and Development Group based in the department. Her work is primarily concentrated in the fields of economic history and applied economics, with specific interests in labor economics, gender economics, development and political economy.

Xanthi’s job market paper – available here – is entitled “The Return of the King: Political Conflict and Female Labor Force Participation.” The paper explores the effects of political conflict on female labor force participation, in the context of the Civil War in Greece. The paper shows that exposure to political opposition to a conservative regime has a positive and significant impact on the economic empowerment of women, as captured by female labor force participation. Furthermore, this effect persists up to thirty years and correlates with current perceptions of gender norms.

Her PhD dissertation – ‘Essays in Economic History’ – explores the role of foreign supplies of coal for Denmark’s development in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, as well as reasons why Denmark was able to outcompete Ireland, the traditional supplier of dairy products to the important UK market.

During her PhD, as well as teaching regularly, Xanthi also gained a number of scholarships which allowed her to undertake a research stay at the University of Arizona as a visiting scholar.
