Main areas of research:

  • Democratic theory
  • Values in science
  • Science-informed policy
  • Scientific advisory systems
  • The moral roles of politicians and civil servants
  • The use of civil disobedience in a democracy

My current research project is on the design of democratically legitimate scientific advisory systems. The research project investigates the question of how scientific evidence can be utilized to inform policy in a way that enhances democratic self-determination without compromising the epistemic reliability of the advice.  The project is funded by the Carlsberg Foundation.

Examples of my recent research:

  • I have put forward an ideal model for democratically legitimate science advice (fit for times of crises) in the article “Reconciling Science and Democracy: evidence-based policy as seen from the perspective of the philosophy of democracy”, Evidence & Policy, 2024.
  • I have developed an account of the professional responsibilities of civil servants and elected politicians in a democracy in the article ”The moral roles of democratically elected politicians and civil servants”, Critical Review of International Social and Political Philosophy, 2024.

I have also done research on the role of dissent in a democracy, including the role of civil disobedience, which I wrote my PhD dissertation on, as well the dissent of civil servants and politicians.

I am a member of the Values and Welfare Research Group at the philosophy section and a guest researcher at the National Institute of Public Health.
