Research Interests
Research. My research is about pedagogy in general, about education, teaching, subject specific teaching and professional development. I have a great interest in communication and the ways in which we participate in roles and contexts in teaching, how school subjects are made visible and activated for pupils, students or course participants. I am particularly interested in the dialogical contexts we enter in teaching and collaboration, and I challenge and develop common forms of dialogue in the classroom. Pupils and students are motivated to investigate and learn through participation and to test their own expression and stand responsible as citizens in a democracy. My starting point for teaching and didactic research has been the Danish subject. Through aesthetic expressions and art, literature and academic texts through writing, speech, visual expressions and bodily experiences, we are motivated to participate. General pedagogical practice and development, attitudes and views of humanity are fundamental discussions in my teaching and research in (inter)cultural competences and communication (including language pedagogy), subject didactics across disciplines, and the pedagogue's/teacher's daily collaboration with other professional groups.
A range of research methods are needed. Qualitative studies and micro-studies of interaction, literacy research and teacher/student's relationship to each other and to the academic materials have been conducted mainly from phenomenological, ethnographic approaches, interaction and rhythm studies, linguistic integrative methods and video analyses. The link between the micro level (e.g., discourse and doings in time and space) and the macro level (e.g., school practice and educational policy consequences) are conducted through different parts of practice theoretical methods. My basis is indeed in dialogue theory and dialogism (in the legacy of M.M Bakhtin), which discusses both the micro level and the consequences of educational policy at the macro level of society and teachers' epistemological understandings of "where does knowledge come from"?
My current research project on Inclusive Dialogue, InDi, is supported by the Independent Research Fund Denmark (DFF), an postdoc Marie Holtet and I at SDU are carrying it out together with researcher representatives from all teacher education programmes in Denmark in a collaborative development work. We investigate how teacher educators at university colleges and at the university can further educate themselves and with each other and colleagues in order to form more varied dialogical teaching spaces than those we see at school, in the study programmes, and the ones we carry out ourselves. Our practice development takes place in collaboration with the student teachers, who in their own campus teaching and internships at the schools investigate the challenges and opportunities for dialogical teaching together with us. We necessarily develop other methods to capture and understand our own practice development. Autoethnographic and posthuman starting points are, among other approaches, helpful for new methods and attention to (perceive) changes in ourselves and our students and to invent ways to develop teacher education in a second-order didactic perspective, teaching of teachers (second-order teaching), or maybe rather second order dialogic perspective.
