Title of the PhD project: “THE FUTURE OF LEADERSHIP?” Temporary agency workers impact on leadership- Focus on leadership issues in leading temporary agency workers Significant changes in the demand and supply of labor via temporary employment agencies have challenged the ability and usability of current employment and management theories. Despite the enormous attention from scholars in this domain, there are still some gaps and issues in the literature that entail for further developments. Previous organization and human resource research on non-standard employment relations seldom address any leadership issues and a number of researches focused on the individual and organizational consequences of being flexible. Most importantly, the empirical studies in the non-standard domain have varied widely in quality (samples sizes and measurement qualities have also been highly inconsistent across studies). Perhaps an important and even preliminary question concerning the growth of this phenomenon is the extent to which existing theories of organizational behavior and employment relations are relevant to blended workforce (standard & flexible). While firms employ temporary agency workers (TAWs) to gain flexibility and reduce labor costs for achieving competitive advantages, the practice presents several managerial problems in the organization along with the reduction of core competency and tacit knowledge which prevent organizations from achieving optimal results. These gaps in the literature are the main motivation to craft an investigation on the ‘problems’, ‘challenges’ and ‘solutions’ of leading temporary agency workers in Denmark. The secondary objective is to develop appropriate solutions and recommendations for better utilization and integration of TAWs. The main hypothesis is that organizational behavior theories are grounded in the experience of traditional and not able to accommodate the contemporary dynamic and blended workforce (temporary & permanent). Keywords: Temporary agency workers, leadership, management, transcendental phenomenology, flexibility, internal vs. external employee integration, organizational behavior.
