Curriculum

Marian van Bakel is Associate Professor with the Department of Business and Management of the University of Southern Denmark, where she conducts research in international human resource management, particularly expatriation. Her main research interests are the social context of expatriation, expatriate-HCN interactions both in and outside the organization, intercultural competence and intercultural mentoring. She received her PhD in international business communication at Radboud University Nijmegen, the Netherlands, while also working as in-house communication consultant at Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre. She serves on the editorial review boards of the International Journal of Human Resource Management and the Journal of Global Mobility.

Funding

In 2016 Marian van Bakel received 173.820DKK funding from Udlændinge-, Integrations- og Boligministeriet for the project ’Breaking out of the expat bubble: Connecting with a Danish colleague’. This was followed in 2019 by a Carlberg Foundation Monograph Fellowship (703.000DKK) to enable her to write a book about her long term research topic 'Breaking out of the Expat Bubble', and a Carlsberg Foundation grant for her international research stay at the University of Auckland in 2024. Furthermore, during her PhD research, Marian van Bakel received several subsidies to enable congress attendance (e.g. LifeLongLearning Programme, two times the Radboud University Nijmegen PhD Internationalisation Fund and a travel scholarship of Catharina van Tussenbroekfonds). In addition, a grant of Catharina van Tussenbroekfonds and Radboud University Nijmegen enabled a three month study visit in 2009 to Reading University (UK), University of Melbourne (Australia), and Victoria University Wellington (New Zealand) to present and discuss her research findings. In 2010 she has also received a scholarship for promising research by external PhD-candidates of the Faculty of Arts, Radboud University Nijmegen.
