Research focus:
The research focus is studying molecular mechanisms of bone formation and identifying novel targets for anabolic therapy of bone loss. The groups is studying human mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) differentiation to osteogenic cells (bone and cartilage forming cells); studying the phenomenon of biological aging of human bone cells and MSC and how the senescent phenotype can be rescued by genetic and non-genetic approaches. First in Denmark to get approval and to generate human embryonic stem cells (hESC) lines, now having generated 6 hESC lines and are being used for cell differentiation studies.
The group is also the driving force behind “Odense University Hospital [OUH] Center for Stem Cell Therapy”. Through this center, we coordinated the first two Danish clinical trials employing autologus bone marrow-derived stem cells for treatment of myocardial ischemia in patients with acute myocardial infarction and ischemic heart failure and for treatment of ischemia of lower extremities. This center provides a unique opportunity to introduce stem cell-based therapies to the clinic and involves a network of several clinical departments: department of Clinical Immunology (prepares the stem cells for administration and testing for immunological effects of therapy), Cardiology and Vascular Surgery (recruit patients and administer the cells), Radiology and Nuclear Medicine (evaluate the therapy).
