My research interests include access to justice with focus on the role of public institutions in delivering welfare to citizens. Concretely, I study the organization and function of national welfare systems, asking how institutional designs, professional cultures and street-level bureaucracy play out and influence the state of welfare and justice in society.
My approach to research is interdisciplinary and empirically oriented. I have great experience with comparative cross-country studies of national policies to inform how we can design new regulatory responses that meet the societal needs and challenges. For my PhD dissertation, I conducted research on labour law enforcement in cases where both employers and workers are foreign to the legal system – a situation which demands new skills and tools from local law enforcers in their communication and verification of existing law to ensure occupational health and safety in the local industries. More information on this project is presented in my book "Re-inventing Labour Law Enforcement: A Socio-Legal Analysis" published with Hart (2020).
In the past couple of years, I have been involved in a project about the global policy dynamics of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) with focus on the development and implementation of new types of regulatory and political measures aimed at arriving at a balance between ensuring access to health care for all and reducing the current overconsumption of antimicrobial drugs to combat the rising rates of AMR (see www.amrsocialscience.com).
I am currently involved in the JUST SOCIETY project at the Department of Political Science. The project aims to contribute to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goal 16: “Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions” by exploring theoretically and empirically the role of public institutions in ensuring access to social justice.
